Although 600$ production Bleach is a clear debut record including filler, at the same moment it is a marvellous and straight record which is presenting some classics already as well. That is not such a magnificiant phenomen of records in the early Grunge era and debuts in general.
Rather the set confirms Nirvana's ability to match heavy riffs with melody and it quickly attracted a cult following. "School" and "About a Girl" became major grunge classics and still they are part of every good rock party - whether at discos or at home. With Bleach Nirvana already show their obvious talent. But while there are those immense classics mostly the entire rest of the album sinks into the sludge and the band ends up in heavy metal riffs that are repeated within the entire tracks sometimes. This fact is less convincing it shows that Bleach is still a rough debut.
However, their line up for this record included second guitarist Jason Everman. Though he is pictured on the cover he played no part in the actual recording (going on to join Mindfunk, via Soundgarden and Skunk).
