After their more or less unsuccessful outing to the major label TVT, Guided by Voices return to Matador and with their new LP Universal Truths and Cycles they set a new remarkable highlight for themselves and their loyal fans.
Indeed the album has got some awesome highlights that are rather known from former Guided by Voices albums like their 94-breakthrough Bee Thousand. Songs like "Back to the Lake" including the breaking and rhythm-giving piano or the forward moving and kind of mechanic sounding "Skin Parade" are unequivocally some of the album's best stuff. With its sometimes cranky production this album reminds more and more of GBV's old Indie and Lo-Fi-days.
Therefore, some might say that Universal Truths and Cycles is the band's best album up to date but in the opposite Pollard seems to set himself a deadline to compose much more Pop songs that can appear in the charts, songs that include more transparent structures - but always without leaving Indie. So this fact does not mean that Universal Truths and Cycles is not a great album. It is but at last it is not their best.
